Bread of Life

My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

Eden is planted with trees good for food, and the first command is about what not to eat. From there the Bible keeps returning to the table. Israel leaves Egypt after a meal eaten in haste, and in the wilderness bread comes down from heaven; the people’s question, “What is it?”, becomes its name. Moses explains why it was given: so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone. The Bread of the Presence sits before God at all times. Elijah, worn out under a broom tree, is told to get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for him. The prophets eat God’s words and find them sweet. Then Jesus says the Father gives the true bread from heaven, and that he is it. He teaches his followers to ask for daily bread, breaks bread on the night he is betrayed, and is recognized at Emmaus as he breaks it. One loaf makes many into one body. The story ends where it began, at the tree of life, now open to those who overcome, with hidden manna besides.
