Abram Believed the Lord

By Faith

Your Faith Has Healed You

Faith Expressing Itself through Love

I Have Kept the Faith

Abram is taken outside and told to count the stars: so shall your offspring be. He has no son, and he believes the Lord, and it is credited to him as righteousness. Paul keeps coming back to it. Against all hope Abraham believed, fully persuaded that God was able to do what he had promised, and “the righteous will live by faith.” Hebrews calls faith “the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see,” and then, instead of explaining, tells stories: Abraham setting out without knowing where he was going, Moses persevering “because he saw Him who is invisible,” Rahab taking in the spies. Many of them died in faith without receiving what was promised. Three young men tell the king of Babylon that God is able to save them, “but even if He does not,” they will not bow. In the Gospels Jesus finds faith where no one expected it, in a Roman centurion and a Canaanite mother, and is amazed at the unbelief in his hometown. A father cries, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” and that is enough; faith the size of a mustard seed can uproot a tree. James insists it shows: faith without deeds is dead, and Paul says what matters is faith expressing itself through love. We walk by faith, not by sight. Jesus prays that Peter’s faith will not fail, and at the end Paul can say, “I have kept the faith.”
