Dwelling in Him

I will dwell with them and walk among them.

In Eden God walks in the garden, and the man hides. The rest of the Bible is God coming closer. He asks for a sanctuary so that he may dwell among his people, and when the work is finished his glory fills the tent. Moses turns it around: Lord, you have been our dwelling place. Solomon knows the highest heavens cannot contain him; Isaiah hears where he chooses to live anyway: with the humble and lowly in spirit. Then the Word becomes flesh and, in John’s Greek, pitches his tent among us. Jesus speaks of many rooms in his Father’s house, and a few verses later uses the same word for the home he and the Father will make with anyone who loves him. Christ lives in Paul, and the church is built together into a dwelling for God. Jacob woke and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was unaware of it.” The Bible ends with nothing left to be unaware of. The dwelling place of God is with man, and the city needs no temple.
