Entering Rest

There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

God rested on the seventh day, and the command to rest makes no exception for plowing or harvest. The commandment is given twice, with two reasons. Exodus points to creation. Deuteronomy points to Egypt: you were slaves, and slaves get no day off. Rest is what freedom looks like. It is also where God is found. “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Elijah meets him not in the fire but in a still, small voice; a psalmist stills and quiets his soul like a weaned child. Isaiah names the catch: your strength would lie in quiet confidence, but you were not willing. Jesus echoes Jeremiah when he promises rest for your souls, and he draws the anxious and the busy aside: Martha, only one thing is necessary. The Son sat down when his work was done. The rest that remains is entered the same way, by ceasing from our own work.
