God of All Things

From Him and through Him and to Him are all things.

You Created All Things

The Eyes of All Look to You

The Purpose of the Lord Will Prevail

God May Be All in All

In All Things God May Be Glorified

The Bible’s first sentence takes in everything: God created the heavens and the earth, and he looked on all he had made and called it very good. The earth is the Lord’s and all who dwell in it, and he gives life to all things. The New Testament says the same of Christ: through him all things were made, in him they hold together, and he upholds them by his powerful word. Nothing is too small for that care. The eyes of all look to him for their food, he calls the stars by name, and not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from the Father’s will, so do not be afraid. There is nowhere to go from his presence, not even Sheol. His purpose prevails over every plan, and the Bible does not hide what that takes in: “I bring prosperity and create calamity,” and Job asks whether we should accept from God only good and not adversity. So when Paul says God works all things together for good, all things includes the hard ones. At the cross Jesus put everything under the Father’s will: “not as I will, but as You will.” Now all authority is his, the Father has placed all things in his hands, and he draws everyone to himself. Everything is in Christ, yet Christ is not yet in everything. We do not yet see all things subject to him, but we see Jesus, and the end is that God may be all in all. Until then we live from the same source: one Lord, through whom all things came and through whom we exist, who gives strength for all things, so that in all things God may be glorified. From him and through him and to him are all things.
