Here I Am

Here am I. Send me!

Speak, for Your Servant Is Listening

Who Am I?

Follow Me

Here I Am! Here I Am!

Walk in a Manner Worthy of the Calling

When God calls a name in the Bible, the answer is often two words: “Here I am.” Abraham says it before he knows what will be asked of him, Jacob says it on the way down to Egypt, Moses says it at the bush, and the boy Samuel keeps running to Eli with it until he learns to say, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” Isaiah hears the Lord ask, “Whom shall I send?” and answers, “Here am I. Send me!” The next answer is usually an objection. Who am I? I am only a child. I was a herdsman, not a prophet. Jonah does not object; he gets up and runs the other way, and the word of the Lord comes to him a second time. God does not argue. He says, “I will surely be with you,” and Paul notes that not many of the called were wise or powerful. In the Gospels the call shrinks to “Follow Me.” Fishermen leave their nets and a tax collector gets up from his booth; others want to bury a father first. “You did not choose Me, but I chose you.” Then the words turn around. God says “Here I am! Here I am!” to a nation that did not call on his name, and the Son says to the Father, “Here I am… I have come to do Your will, O God.” His gifts and his call are irrevocable, and the One who calls is faithful. At the end the called are guests: “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”
