The Humility of Christ

I am gentle and humble in heart.

He Attends to the Lowly

Walk Humbly with Your God

He Humbled Himself

Whoever Humbles Himself

Clothe Yourselves with Humility

The God of the Bible is high and lifted up, and he chooses to live with the humble and contrite. Hannah sings that he humbles and he exalts, and Mary sings it again: he has brought down rulers from their thrones and exalted the humble. The people who walk closest to him know their size. Moses is the most humble man on the face of the earth. Israel is led forty years through the wilderness to be humbled. Nebuchadnezzar, given back his mind, praises the King of heaven, who “is able to humble those who walk in pride.” Micah sums up what the Lord asks: act justly, love mercy, “walk humbly with your God.” Then God does it himself. The Son, existing in the form of God, empties himself, takes the form of a servant, and humbles himself to death on a cross. He calls himself “gentle and humble in heart,” washes his disciples’ feet, and says, “I am among you as one who serves.” He tells it as a reversal: take the last seat; become like a little child. The tax collector who would not lift his eyes went home justified. Paul asks the plainest question: “What do you have that you did not receive?” So humility is something to put on, like clothing, toward one another. God gives grace to the humble, and in due time he will exalt you.
