Scripture Folios

Knowing Truth

You will know the truth.

The Greek word is aletheia, and in John it means more than a correct statement. It means the reality underneath what appears. So Jesus does not claim to teach the truth; he says he is it, and Pilate, standing in front of him, asks what truth is. God wants it in the inmost being, and a Spirit of truth is promised who abides with those who know him and guides them into all of it. This is knowing by contact. Job had heard of God; then he saw. The letter kills and the Spirit gives life. Hearts burn on a road as the Scriptures open, senses are trained by use, and the one who desires to do God’s will comes to know. Then truth does things: it gives birth, sets apart, purifies, and grows us up into Christ. The folio ends with the promise: continue in his word, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
