Light of Life

In Your light we see light.

The first thing God says is “Let there be light,” into a darkness over the deep, and Paul says the same God has made his light shine in our hearts. Between those two sentences, light keeps marking where God is: a bush that burns and is not consumed, lamps kept burning on pressed olive oil, Moses’ face shining as he comes down the mountain, unaware of it. The blessing asks that the Lord’s face shine on you. Proverbs calls the human spirit the lamp of the Lord, and the path of the righteous grows brighter until midday. Then the light comes in person. People walking in darkness see it, the darkness has not overcome it, and whoever follows him will not walk in darkness. John says it plainly: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. Paul says we were not only in the dark but were darkness, and now are light in the Lord, a treasure carried in jars of clay. Isaiah promised a day when the sun would no longer be needed. Revelation’s city has no need of sun or moon; the Lamb is its lamp.
