One with Him

He who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.

The Bible’s first word for union is the one used of a man and his wife: he will hold fast to her, and the two will become one flesh. Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew verb for Israel and God: hold fast to him. When Paul writes that whoever is joined to the Lord is one with him in spirit, his word for joined comes from the same Greek verb the old Greek Bible uses in both places, and a line earlier he quotes Genesis. In Ephesians he calls it a profound mystery and says he is speaking about Christ and the church. The Song says it simply: my beloved is mine and I am his. Hosea hears God betroth his people forever, so that they will know him. Jesus puts it in prepositions: I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you. The way in runs through a death. He emptied himself; we are united with him in his death and in his resurrection; I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. Your life is now hidden with Christ in God, and Christ is your life. It begins with a knock at the door.
