The Power of His Resurrection

Job asks whether a man who dies will live again, and then says it anyway: “I know that my Redeemer lives,” and in my flesh I will see God. The psalmist trusts that God will not let his Holy One see decay. Isaiah tells those who dwell in the dust to wake and sing, Hosea speaks of the third day and asks, “Where, O Death, are your plagues?” and Daniel sees the sleepers in the dust awake. Jesus says he will be killed and after three days rise again, that the temple of his body will be raised in three days, and that all who are in their graves will hear his voice. At Lazarus’s tomb he tells Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life,” and calls a dead man out. Then his own tomb is empty: “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said!” He shows his hands and feet, tells Thomas to touch his side, and appears to more than five hundred people at once. In Athens some mocked. Paul stakes everything on it: if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile. But he has been raised, the firstfruits, and what is sown perishable is raised imperishable, until death is swallowed up in victory. The same power is at work now. We walk in newness of life, and the Spirit who raised Jesus gives life to our mortal bodies. Paul wants to know the power of his resurrection, and the one John sees says, “I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever!”
