Setting the Mind

The mind of the Spirit is life and peace.

Paul says the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, and tells us to set our minds on things above. To set the mind is to choose where attention rests, and Isaiah promises perfect peace to the steadfast mind. In Scripture, God’s call often waits on that choice. Moses goes over to look at a bush that does not burn, and only when the Lord sees that he has gone over to look does God call his name. Samuel learns to say, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” Jesus asks the same of everyone: pay attention to what you hear. Then come the practices: Daniel at his window three times a day, a psalmist meditating day and night, a soul waiting for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning. Repentance is a turn of the mind, and the prodigal’s way home begins when he comes to his senses. Whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away, and the mind is renewed. The promise at the end is plain: search with all your heart, and you will find.
