The Heart

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

The Lord Sees the Heart

Out of the Overflow of the Heart

A Heart of Flesh

With All Your Heart

Blessed Are the Pure in Heart

In the Bible the heart does much more than feel. It plans its course, ponders, decides what to give, believes, and treasures things up the way Mary did. That is why the Lord looks there first: man sees the outward appearance, “but the Lord sees the heart.” He searches every heart and understands the intent of every thought, and the psalmist asks him to: “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” What he finds is not flattering. Before the flood every inclination of the thoughts of man’s heart was evil; Jeremiah calls it deceitful above all things; Jesus says evil thoughts, murder, and slander come out of it, and the mouth speaks from its overflow. People can honor God with their lips while their hearts are far from him, and where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So the promise is not a repair but a replacement. God will circumcise hearts, give a heart to know him, write his law on it, and take out the heart of stone to give a heart of flesh. Paul calls the church a letter written by the Spirit on tablets of human hearts. Then the heart is asked for whole: love the Lord with all your heart; “Give me an undivided heart”; guard it with all diligence; exhort one another daily so that none is hardened. With the heart you believe. The Lord opened Lydia’s heart, and two disciples felt their hearts burning as he opened the Scriptures. Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and the pure in heart will see God.
