John opens his Gospel with the first words of Genesis, “In the beginning,” and puts the Word where Genesis has God speaking. In the Hebrew Scriptures God’s word is never just talk. He speaks and it comes to be; he sends his word and heals; his word goes out like rain and snow and does not come back empty. Then the Word becomes flesh, and John’s letter insists it was heard, seen and touched. The same Son upholds all things by his powerful word, and a Roman officer understands that kind of authority well enough to ask only for a word. Paul calls the cross itself a word, foolishness to some and the power of God to others. The word cannot be chained; it spreads and multiplies. In the believer it is a seed, planted and received, hidden in the heart, the imperishable seed we are born again from, clung to until it bears a crop. Heaven and earth will pass away. The word of the Lord stands forever.
