Water of Life

Streams of living water will flow from within him.

The Bible opens with a river flowing out of Eden and closes with one flowing from the throne, the tree of life on its banks and its leaves for healing. In between, water keeps arriving where it should not. Bitter water at Marah turns sweet when a log is thrown in, and God names himself the one who heals. A struck rock in the desert pours out water, and Paul says the rock was Christ; on the cross his side is pierced, and water flows. God calls himself a fountain of living water and grieves that his people have dug cisterns instead, which crack and leak. A cistern only holds what it is given; a spring makes its own. So the water is offered without money and poured out, and Isaiah, John and Titus each name what is poured: the Spirit. At a well in Samaria, Jesus promises water that becomes a spring inside the one who drinks it. The last word is an invitation: let the one who is thirsty come.
