In Wisdom You Have Made Them All

The Foolishness of God

The Wisdom from Above

Proverbs says the Lord founded the earth by wisdom, and then lets wisdom speak for herself: she was there before the earth began, a skilled craftsman at his side, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in the sons of men. Job asks where wisdom can be found and hears that only God knows its place; what he tells man is plain: the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. Proverbs prizes it above rubies and gold and says where it starts: trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not be wise in your own eyes. It is something you ask for. Solomon asks for a discerning heart instead of long life or wealth, and Israel sees that the wisdom of God is in him. Isaiah sees the Spirit of wisdom resting on the coming king, Jesus grows in wisdom, and One greater than Solomon is here. James makes the offer to anyone who lacks it: ask God, who gives generously. Then Paul turns it over. The world through its wisdom did not know God, so God saved people through the foolishness of a crucified Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God. These things are hidden from the wise and learned and revealed to little children. The wisdom from above shows in humility and good conduct, pure, peace-loving, gentle, full of mercy. In Christ are hidden all its treasures, and Paul can only end in wonder: “O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!”
